]Let’s not overreact here guys. That penalty gets given all the time. Sure, it’s on the softer side of things because you can see Sterling playing for it the whole way. But he still got a defender to take the bait and reach in without getting close to the ball. I have a hard time having too much sympathy for a defender who makes that bad of an attempt for the ball in that situation. There was no need to make the challenge.

It’s a distasteful result because it’s a soft penalty in a major tournament semifinal that decides it in extra time. And that sucks. But it’s not some phantom once in a lifetime awful decision. And it’s probably not a makeup given Makkelie had no reason to think he got the first one wrong.
