No, it's not Thierry Henry, who has been linked to the New York Red Bulls repeatedly over the past six months. It's Villarreal midfielder Robert Pires, according to an exclusive story on MLSsoccer.com this afternoon.
"There is an offer on the table from an MLS team and we're trying to work the details," said Pires' U.S. representative, Memed Djemmal. "The negotiation is in progress and we are working on the details. It's just a matter of him finishing at Villarreal properly because he has a super relationship with the club there."
Pires, 36, has been with Villarreal since 2006, making 24 appearances during the current La Liga season. Prior to joining the Yellow Submarine, the attacking midfielder/winger played for Arsenal from 2000-2006, scoring 62 goals in 189 matches, helping the club win the Premier League in the 2001/02 and 2003/04 seasons. He has also suited up in his home country for FC Metz and Olympique de Marseille in his career.
Internationally, Pires made 79 appearances for his country between 1996-2004. He helped France win the 1998 World Cup, 2000 European Championship and the Confederations Cup in 2001 and 2003, and was also part of the squad at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2004 European Championship.
While the specific team that is attempting to sign Pires was not identified in the story, a report out of France last week connected him to the Philadelphia Union. His contract with Villarreal expires this summer, but there is a slight chance that Pires could make an immediate move to the United States; Villarreal is said to be willing to let him go now, but family commitments may delay the move until this summer.
"He could have a chance [of making an immediate move]," continued Djemmal. "I doubt it will happen before the 15th - it's 70/30 that it does not happen. Villarreal would have agreed, but there are many factors. It would have to be a quick decision and he has two very young kids. It is too quick a decision to come by April 15th. He wanted to finish the season there."
